Why Choose Finland for Your Studies?
Finland offers an outstanding education system that’s student-centered, research-oriented, and globally competitive.
Highlights for International Students
-
🎓 600+ English-taught bachelor’s & master’s programs across universities and universities of applied sciences (UAS)
-
🌍 Inclusive, safe, and multicultural environment
-
💼 Strong focus on innovation, research, and employability
-
🇫🇮 Option to stay and work after graduation with a post-study permit
-
🏙️ Vibrant student life in cities like Helsinki, Tampere, Turku, and Oulu
inland consistently ranks among the world’s happiest and safest countries and welcomes students who want to grow academically and professionally.
Universities & Programs
Finland has a strong higher education system consisting of:
-
13 Universities (research-focused)
-
22 Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) (practical, career-oriented)
Together, they host over 30,000 international students and offer a broad range of programs in technology, business, health sciences, design, arts, social sciences, and more all delivered in English.
Application & Admissions
Applications to Finnish universities and UAS are generally made through the Studyinfo.fi portal. Each program may have specific eligibility requirements, admission tests, or interviews.
Typical Eligibility
-
Bachelor’s degree: High school diploma or equivalent
-
Master’s degree: Recognised bachelor’s degree; some UAS programs also require work experience
-
Doctorate (PhD): Relevant Master’s degree and research proposal (often funded)
Applicants must ensure they meet the program’s criteria before submitting their application.
Tuition Fees & Living Costs
Tuition Fees
Non-EU/EEA students are required to pay tuition fees for English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programs.
-
Typical range: €8,000 – €20,000 per year (varies by university & program)
-
PhD programs: Often tuition-free and sometimes funded with a stipend
Living Costs
Finland is an advanced Nordic country, and living expenses reflect the quality of life:
-
Monthly living costs: approx. €700 – €900, depending on city & lifestyle
-
Accommodation, transport, food, and health insurance are key components of the total budget.
Scholarships & Financial Support
Finland does not currently offer a central government student scholarship for international students but many universities provide tuition fee waivers or partial scholarships based on merit.
Scholarships are typically competitive and may cover part or all of the tuition fee. However, living costs are not usually covered by these awards, so students should plan their finances carefully.
Student Residence Permit & Visa
If your studies last longer than 90 days, you must obtain a student residence permit.
Key Requirements
-
Valid passport
-
Letter of admission from a recognised Finnish institution
-
Proof of sufficient funds to cover living expenses
-
Health insurance (mandatory)
Applications are usually submitted online via the Enter Finland portal, followed by biometrics at a Finnish embassy or VFS Global centre.
Work Rights During & After Studies
During Studies
Non-EU/EEA students with a valid residence permit can work part-time while studying typically up to an average of 30 hours per week.
This can help cover some living expenses, but students should prioritise their studies and financial planning.
After Graduation
Finland offers a post-study residence permit for up to 2 years to look for work or start a business after graduation.
This extended period is an excellent opportunity for graduates to gain professional experience and potentially continue their career in Finland or Europe.
